Land at Ngurah Rai International (DPS), a few minutes from Kuta — the shortest airport transfer on the island. Indian passport holders get visa on arrival at IDR 500,000, about ₹2,655 for 30 days, and Bali's tourist levy adds IDR 150,000 (~₹750), mandatory since February 2024. Check in at Kuta and walk down for the sunset; it is the one thing the strip does better than anywhere else on Bali.
A long day and worth it. Fast boats leave Sanur for Nusa Penida and cross in 30–45 minutes; door to door the trip runs 10–12 hours, typically 07:00 to 18:00. The west-coast circuit takes in Kelingking Beach and its dinosaur-shaped headland, Broken Beach, Angel's Billabong and Crystal Bay. Island roads are rough and journeys between viewpoints are slower than the distances suggest. Seas are choppier in the afternoon, so crossings are calmer early.
Check out after breakfast and transfer from Kuta to Ubud — around 35 km, but plan for 1.5 to 2 hours on Bali's single-carriageway roads. There is no fast route between the hills and the coast, and traffic through the southern suburbs is the constraint. Arrive, check in, and take the rest of the day at the new base. The Tegallalang terraces sit north of Ubud and make the natural stop on the way in.
Ubud is Bali's cultural centre, inland and cooler than the coast. Tegallalang's rice terraces belong to the subak irrigation system UNESCO lists. Ubud Art Market faces the royal palace and is where the output of the surrounding craft villages ends up — Mas carves wood, Celuk works silver. Bargaining is expected and starts at roughly half. The waterfalls east of town, Tegenungan closest, need an hour and steep steps.
Uluwatu Temple sits on a cliff about 70 metres above the Indian Ocean on Bali's southern tip. The Kecak fire dance is performed in the clifftop amphitheatre at sunset, around 18:00, told through a chanting male chorus rather than a gamelan orchestra — the timing means the performance ends as the light goes. Fair warning: the resident macaques are practised thieves and go for sunglasses and phones.
Breakfast and check-out, usually 11:00. Allow properly for the drive back to Ngurah Rai — southern Bali traffic is unpredictable and the run from Kuta can take far longer than distance implies. International departures need three hours; the airport is busiest in the evening.
