Land at Ngurah Rai International (DPS). Visa on arrival for Indian passport holders is IDR 500,000 (~₹2,655) for 30 days; Bali's tourist levy is a further IDR 150,000 (~₹750) per person, compulsory since February 2024. Transfer inland to Ubud — allow ninety minutes and more in the evening. This is the longest of the Bali itineraries, so the pace starts deliberately slow.
Ubud is the inland counterweight to the beaches later in the trip — river gorges, rice terraces and temple compounds rather than surf. Tegallalang's terraces sit inside the subak water-sharing system UNESCO lists. The Campuhan Ridge Walk follows a ridge between two rivers and takes an hour each way. Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary anchors the south end of town.
The gorges north and east of Ubud hold a run of waterfalls: Tegenungan is the shortest walk in, Tibumana and Kanto Lampo take more effort and hold fewer people. Tirta Empul, the spring-water purification temple at Tampaksiring, is on the same circuit — bathing there follows a set order along the fountains and a sarong is required. Steps are steep and slippery after rain.
A long day and worth it. Fast boats leave Sanur for Nusa Penida and cross in 30–45 minutes; door to door the trip runs 10–12 hours, typically 07:00 to 18:00. The west-coast circuit takes in Kelingking Beach and its dinosaur-shaped headland, Broken Beach, Angel's Billabong and Crystal Bay. Island roads are rough and journeys between viewpoints are slower than the distances suggest. Seas are choppier in the afternoon, so crossings are calmer early.
Check out after breakfast and transfer from Ubud to Seminyak — around 35 km, but plan for 1.5 to 2 hours on Bali's single-carriageway roads. There is no fast route between the hills and the coast, and traffic through the southern suburbs is the constraint. Arrive, check in, and take the rest of the day at the new base.
Seminyak is the upmarket stretch of coast north of Kuta — beach clubs, boutiques and a west-facing beach that makes sunset the fixed point of the day. The surf here has a real current and is stronger than it looks; swim between the flags. Petitenget Temple sits directly on the sand at the northern end.
Uluwatu Temple sits on a cliff about 70 metres above the Indian Ocean on Bali's southern tip. The Kecak fire dance is performed in the clifftop amphitheatre at sunset, around 18:00, told through a chanting male chorus rather than a gamelan orchestra — the timing means the performance ends as the light goes. Fair warning: the resident macaques are practised thieves and go for sunglasses and phones.
Breakfast and check-out, usually 11:00. Allow properly for the drive back to Ngurah Rai — southern Bali traffic is unpredictable and the run from Seminyak can take far longer than distance implies. International departures need three hours; the airport is busiest in the evening.
