Land at Ngurah Rai International (DPS). Visa on arrival for Indian passport holders costs IDR 500,000, roughly ₹2,655 for 30 days, and Bali's tourist levy adds IDR 150,000 (~₹750) per person — compulsory since February 2024 and easy to forget. The drive north to Ubud takes ninety minutes or more. Villa check-in, and nothing else planned; the first evening is for the plunge pool.
Ubud sits in the hills, not on the coast, and the difference sets the tone for the whole stay. Tegallalang's terraces step down the valley in the subak pattern UNESCO recognises. The Campuhan Ridge Walk runs a spine between two river gorges and takes about an hour each way — go at dawn, when it is cool and empty. Monkey Forest sits at the southern end of town.
North of Ubud the terrain drops through gorges to a run of waterfalls — Tegenungan is the closest and easiest, Tibumana and Kanto Lampo need more of a walk in and reward it with fewer people. Steps down are steep and slick after rain; footwear matters more than you expect. Balinese massage uses long strokes and acupressure with coconut or frangipani oil, and the afternoon is the right time for it.
Check out after breakfast and transfer from Ubud to Seminyak — around 35 km, but plan for 1.5 to 2 hours on Bali's single-carriageway roads. There is no fast route between the hills and the coast, and traffic through the southern suburbs is the constraint. Arrive, check in, and take the rest of the day at the new base.
Seminyak is the upmarket stretch of coast north of Kuta — beach clubs, boutiques and a west-facing beach that makes sunset the fixed point of the day. The surf here has a real current and is stronger than it looks; swim between the flags. Petitenget Temple sits directly on the sand at the northern end.
Uluwatu Temple sits on a cliff about 70 metres above the Indian Ocean on Bali's southern tip. The Kecak fire dance is performed in the clifftop amphitheatre at sunset, around 18:00, told through a chanting male chorus rather than a gamelan orchestra — the timing means the performance ends as the light goes. Fair warning: the resident macaques are practised thieves and go for sunglasses and phones.
Breakfast and check-out, usually 11:00. Allow properly for the drive back to Ngurah Rai — southern Bali traffic is unpredictable and the run from Seminyak can take far longer than distance implies. International departures need three hours; the airport is busiest in the evening.
