Land at Charles de Gaulle (CDG), 45 minutes into the city on the RER B. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa: €90 plus VFS fees, 10–15 working days at the consulate but 4–8 weeks door to door with appointment waits, and up to 45 days in the May–August peak. One visa covers this whole route; apply for the country holding the most of your nights.
Book the Eiffel Tower well ahead — summit lifts go days in advance. Seine cruises leave from Port de la Bourdonnais beneath it, and the tower sparkles for five minutes on the hour after dark. Notre-Dame reopened in December 2024; cathedral entry is free but the queue builds from opening.
The Louvre closes Tuesdays and requires timed entry. Choose two wings; nobody sees it all. Montmartre in the afternoon — Sacré-Cœur on its hill, Place du Tertre behind. Versailles is the swap if you would rather have gardens than galleries, closed Mondays.
TGV Lyria via Basel, five to six hours centre to centre, or a short flight to Zurich. Lucerne sits at the head of its lake with the Kapellbrücke, the covered wooden bridge from the 1330s, and Mount Pilatus behind. Swiss trains keep to the printed minute, which takes some adjusting to after Paris.
Engelberg is 45 minutes away and the Titlis Rotair turns through a full circle on the climb to 3,020 metres. Glacier cave and Cliff Walk at the top, permanent snow, and glare that needs sunglasses. The Lion Monument and a lake steamer fill the afternoon back in town.
Around ninety minutes by air, or a scenic rail day through Milan. Venice has no cars at all — from Piazzale Roma or Santa Lucia station you move by vaporetto or on foot, and the bridges make luggage the first challenge. The day-tripper access fee introduced in 2024 does not apply to overnight guests.
St Mark's Basilica is free but the queue is long and the dress code enforced. The Doge's Palace beside it is ticketed and worth the time for the Bridge of Sighs. The Rialto is the oldest of the four bridges across the Grand Canal and the market beside it opens early and closes by lunchtime. Gondola fares are fixed by the city, not negotiated — around €90 for thirty minutes by day, per boat.
Vaporetto 12 from Fondamente Nove reaches Murano in ten minutes and Burano in about forty — glass since 1291 on the first, painted fishermen's houses and lace on the second. Then south to Rome, either a flight of an hour or the Frecciarossa high-speed train, which does Venice to Roma Termini in about three hours forty and is the more civilised option.
Colosseum, Forum and Palatine on one timed combined ticket, and it wants a full morning. There is almost no shade in the Forum, so start early in summer. The Pantheon in the afternoon — still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome after nineteen centuries — and the Trevi Fountain, best before nine or after nine.
Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel close Sundays except the last of the month, which is free and packed accordingly. Book a slot: the walk-up queue can run hours. St Peter's is free with a dress code enforced at the door, and the dome is 551 steps above the lift stage.
Trastevere across the river is the old working quarter — narrow lanes, Santa Maria in Trastevere with its twelfth-century mosaics, and the best evening eating in the city. The Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori are all walkable from the centre if you would rather stay north of the Tiber.
Leonardo Express from Termini to Fiumicino, 32 minutes, every fifteen. Rome's traffic makes the train the reliable choice. Three hours at the airport, and remember VAT refund desks need time if you have been shopping.
