Land at Bandaranaike International (CMB), which is actually 35 km north of Colombo near Negombo. Good news for Indian travellers: since May 2026 Sri Lanka's tourist ETA is free for Indian passport holders — a 30-day stay with double entry — but you still have to apply online before arrival. Passport must have six months' validity. Transfer into Colombo is 45–60 minutes on the expressway.
Colombo is a working port city rather than a resort, and better for it. The Fort district holds the Dutch-era Old Hospital and the red-and-white striped Jami Ul-Alfar mosque in Pettah, the market quarter, which is chaotic and worth an hour. Gangaramaya Temple mixes Sri Lankan, Thai and Chinese styles. Galle Face Green at dusk is where the city walks, eats isso wade and flies kites.
About 120 km inland and uphill, three to four hours — the road climbs steadily and the last stretch is winding. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage sits roughly halfway and is the usual stop, though it divides opinion; the river bathing session is the part most people come for. Kandy sits in a bowl of hills around an artificial lake built by the last Sinhalese king.
The Sri Dalada Maligawa holds a tooth relic of the Buddha and is Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist site. Puja ceremonies run three times daily — dawn, midday and evening — and the relic chamber is only opened during them, so timing matters. White dress is customary, shoulders and knees covered, shoes off at the entrance. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, 6 km west, hold an avenue of palms planted in 1905.
Down to the south-west coast, about 200 km and four to five hours depending on the route. Bentota sits where the river meets the sea, which is what makes it work: beach on one side, mangrove estuary on the other. The Madu River boat safari runs through mangrove tunnels to small islands, and turtle hatcheries along this coast release young into the sea most evenings.
Breakfast, then north to Bandaranaike International — about 100 km up the coastal expressway, roughly two hours. This is a long transfer and traffic through Colombo is the variable. Three hours at the airport for an international departure. Note the monsoon split: this south-west coast is at its best November to April.
