Land at Charles de Gaulle (CDG), 45 minutes from the centre on the RER B. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa — €90 plus VFS charges, 10–15 working days at the consulate but 4–8 weeks realistically once appointment waits are counted, and up to 45 days between May and August. This trip crosses France, Switzerland and Italy on one visa; apply for the country where you spend the most nights.
Book the Eiffel Tower ahead — summit lifts sell out days in advance. The Louvre closes Tuesdays and needs timed entry; pick two wings rather than attempting the lot. Notre-Dame reopened in December 2024 after the fire and cathedral entry remains free, though the queue starts early. Evening Seine cruise, with the tower sparkling for five minutes on the hour after dark.
Montmartre climbs to Sacré-Cœur with the whole city below it, the artists' square at Place du Tertre behind. Versailles is the alternative full day — closed Mondays, reached on the RER C in about an hour, and the gardens are the half most people skimp on. Either fills the day properly; trying both does neither justice.
TGV Lyria to Basel then onward, roughly five to six hours station to station, or a short flight into Zurich. Rail lands you in the centre of town. Lucerne sits at the head of its lake beneath Mount Pilatus, with the Kapellbrücke — a covered wooden bridge first built in the 1330s — two minutes from the station.
Engelberg is 45 minutes by train, and the Titlis Rotair rotates through a full circle as it climbs to 3,020 metres. A glacier cave and the Cliff Walk suspension bridge sit at the summit; snow is permanent, so take gloves whatever the month. Back in Lucerne, the Lion Monument is carved into rock above the old town and Lake Lucerne steamers run through the afternoon.
Switzerland to Italy is a flight of about ninety minutes, or a long rail day via Milan. Rome's Fiumicino (FCO) is 30 km from the centre with the Leonardo Express covering it in 32 minutes to Termini. The change in register is abrupt — from Alpine order to a city built in layers over three thousand years.
Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill share a combined ticket and want a full morning; timed entry is compulsory and slots go early. The Forum has almost no shade, so an early start matters in summer. Afternoon for the Pantheon — still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world, nearly nineteen centuries on — and the Trevi Fountain, which is busiest between ten and six.
Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel close on Sundays except the last of each month, when entry is free and correspondingly crowded. Book a timed slot; the walk-up queue routinely runs for hours. St Peter's Basilica is free but enforces its dress code at the door — shoulders and knees covered, for everyone. The dome climb is 551 steps if you skip the lift, and worth it.
Breakfast, then the Leonardo Express from Termini to Fiumicino, 32 minutes and running every fifteen. Rome traffic makes the train the safer choice over a taxi. Three hours at the airport for an international departure.
