Land at Noi Bai International (HAN), about 30 km north of the city, 45 minutes in. Indian passport holders need a Vietnam e-visa — USD 25 single-entry, USD 50 multiple-entry, now valid for stays up to 90 days. Apply online before you fly; there is no visa on arrival for tourists. The Old Quarter is where you want to be: thirty-six streets each named for the guild that once traded there, and still organised roughly that way.
Hoan Kiem Lake anchors the Old Quarter, with Ngoc Son Temple reached across a red wooden bridge. Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum is the set piece — closed Mondays and Fridays, and shut for several weeks most autumns for maintenance, so check before going; silence and covered knees are required inside. The Temple of Literature nearby was Vietnam's first university, founded 1070. Evening: bia hoi on the pavement, brewed that morning and poured from a keg.
About 165 km east, two and a half to three hours on the expressway. Halong is a UNESCO site of roughly 1,600 limestone islands and outcrops rising from the Gulf of Tonkin, most of them uninhabited. Overnight junk cruises are the standard way to see it — boarding is usually early afternoon, with kayaking and a cave stop before dark. Weather makes or breaks this: October to April is drier and clearer, and cruises are occasionally cancelled outright for storms.
This is a flight, not a drive. Ho Chi Minh City is about 1,700 km south — roughly two hours in the air from Hanoi, and a day and a half by road. Transfer back to Noi Bai, fly to Tan Son Nhat (SGN), and expect a warmer, wetter, faster city at the other end. Saigon runs on motorbikes; crossing the road is done by walking steadily and letting the traffic flow around you.
Reunification Palace sits frozen in April 1975, down to the maps on the situation-room walls. The War Remnants Museum a few blocks away is unflinching and worth the discomfort. Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office, a Gustave Eiffel-era building still working as a post office, sit together on the same square. Ben Thanh Market for the evening; bargaining starts around half.
Two options, both about 70 km out. The Cu Chi tunnels are a 250 km network dug by hand during the war — a short crawlable section is opened for visitors and it is genuinely tight, so skip it if confined spaces are a problem. The Mekong Delta alternative runs to My Tho for sampan channels, coconut-candy workshops and floating markets. Half-day or full-day versions of each.
Breakfast, then Tan Son Nhat — about 8 km from District 1 but budget 45 minutes, because Saigon traffic does not behave. Three hours for an international departure. The airport is compact and the queues at immigration are the slow part.
