Land at Kuala Lumpur International (KLIA), 55 km south of the city — about an hour by road, or 28 minutes on the KLIA Ekspres to KL Sentral. Indian passport holders currently travel visa-free for up to 30 days, in place until 31 December 2026, but the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card is mandatory and must be submitted within 72 hours before arrival. It costs nothing and takes five minutes; without it you will be held at immigration.
Kuala Lumpur is an inland city built where two rivers meet — the name means "muddy confluence" — and the nearest coast is about 40 km away, so this is a city day rather than a beach one. The Petronas Twin Towers reach 452 metres, with the Skybridge at level 41 and the deck at 86; tickets are timed and go early. Merdeka Square, the Jamek Mosque at the river junction and Central Market cover the colonial and older quarters.
Batu Caves lies 13 km north: a limestone cavern temple reached by 272 rainbow-painted steps beneath a 42.7-metre gilded statue of Lord Murugan, one of the most important Tamil Hindu sites outside India. Dress modestly, go early, and keep food out of sight because the macaques will take it. Afternoon in Chinatown around Petaling Street, then Jalan Alor after dark for the food stalls.
Langkawi is an island in the Andaman Sea off Malaysia's north-west coast, close to the Thai border — roughly 450 km away and not reachable by road. The flight from KL takes about an hour. Langkawi is a duty-free island, which is why alcohol and chocolate are conspicuously cheap here. Pantai Cenang is the main beach strip, 15–20 minutes from the airport.
The Langkawi SkyCab climbs Machinchang mountain to the curved 125-metre SkyBridge, suspended over rainforest with Thailand visible on a clear day; it closes for maintenance periods, so check before going. Island-hopping boats run to Dayang Bunting — the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden, a freshwater lake in a limestone bowl a few metres from the sea — plus Beras Basah beach and the eagle-feeding site in the mangroves.
Breakfast, then Langkawi International, 15–20 minutes from Pantai Cenang and small enough that queues move fast. If you are connecting through Kuala Lumpur, budget properly for the transfer at KLIA — international and domestic terminals are separate and the change is not quick. Duty-free allowances apply on leaving the island.
