Land at Velana International (MLE) beside Malé. Indian passport holders get a free 30-day visa on arrival. Onward transfer is by speedboat (roughly 15–50 minutes), seaplane (about 40 minutes plus a short boat hop), or for the outer atolls a domestic flight followed by a boat, totalling one to two hours. Seaplanes are restricted to daylight hours, 06:00–15:30. Arrive, unpack, and let the pace drop.
Start with the island's own reef. Maldivian resort islands are ringed by coral that drops away into deeper water, and that drop-off is where the life concentrates — reef sharks patrolling, turtles grazing, schools of fusiliers turning together. Morning visibility is the best you will get. Spend the afternoon working out which corner of the island is yours for the week.
A full day on the water reaching sites the house reef cannot match. What is on offer depends on where and when: South Ari Atoll holds whale sharks year-round, while Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — draws large manta aggregations roughly May to November. Neither is guaranteed; both are wild animals in open water. Lunch is usually taken on the boat or at a sandbank.
A sandbank drop-off puts you on a strip of sand with no structures, no shade and no one else — a few hours of genuine isolation. Afternoon at the spa, where overwater treatment rooms typically have a glass floor panel onto the lagoon. If you want one uninterrupted day where nothing is scheduled, make it this one.
A dhoni cruise as the light goes, with spinner dolphins the likely company — they are resident across the atolls and most active in the late afternoon. Some islands sit near water where bioluminescent plankton light the shoreline after dark; it is seasonal and unpredictable, but worth asking about on the night. Dinner afterwards, and the last full evening of the trip.
Breakfast and check-out, usually 11:00 with late check-out subject to availability. Transfers work backwards from your flight time, and seaplane resorts are governed by the 06:00–15:30 daylight window rather than convenience. Build in buffer at Velana International — the afternoon is when the terminal fills.
