Land at Bandaranaike International (CMB), 35 km north of the city near Negombo. Sri Lanka's tourist ETA has been free for Indian passport holders since May 2026 — 30 days, double entry — but the application still has to be made online before you travel, and your passport needs six months' validity. Transfer in takes 45–60 minutes.
The Fort quarter holds the Dutch colonial core; Pettah next door is the market district, dense and loud, with the striped Jami Ul-Alfar mosque at its heart. Gangaramaya Temple blends Sri Lankan, Thai and Chinese architecture and keeps a working monastery. End at Galle Face Green, the seafront promenade, at sunset when half the city is there.
North into the Cultural Triangle, about 175 km and four hours. Sigiriya is a 200-metre granite plug with a fifth-century royal citadel on top, built by King Kasyapa and abandoned within two decades. Dambulla's cave temples are 20 km south — five caves cut into a rock overhang holding 150-odd Buddha images and ceiling frescoes that follow the contours of the stone.
Climb early. Sigiriya is roughly 1,200 steps, exposed most of the way, and by nine the heat and the queues on the narrow staircases both become a problem. Halfway up, a sheltered gallery holds the frescoes of the Sigiriya maidens; above them the Mirror Wall carries graffiti left by visitors from the eighth century onward. The summit holds the foundations of the palace and the whole plain below it.
About 90 km south, two and a half hours through spice-growing country — Matale's gardens along the way are the standard stop for cinnamon, cardamom and pepper. Kandy sits in a natural bowl around a lake dug by Sri Lanka's last king in 1807, and was the final capital to fall to the British, in 1815.
Sri Dalada Maligawa houses a tooth relic of the Buddha, the most venerated object in the country. The relic chamber opens only during the three daily puja ceremonies at dawn, midday and evening — go for one of them or the visit is hollow. White clothing is customary; shoulders and knees covered, shoes removed. Peradeniya's botanic gardens are 6 km out and worth a half day.
One of the great rail journeys, and the reason to do this circuit rather than fly between beaches. The line climbs through tea country to Ella in six to seven hours, past estates, waterfalls and the tunnels of the hill line. Reserved seats sell out well in advance; second-class unreserved is standing room and open doorways. The Nine Arch Bridge near Ella is the photograph everyone knows.
Little Adam's Peak is a gentle hour to a ridge with the Ella Gap falling away in front of you. Ella Rock is harder, two to three hours, and the path is unmarked in places. Ravana Falls sits on the road south. Tea factory tours in the surrounding estates explain the plucking-to-processing chain in an hour and end, inevitably, in the tasting room.
Down to the south-west coast, about 200 km and five hours, dropping out of the hills into heat again. Bentota sits between river and sea — Madu River mangrove safaris on one side, beach on the other, and turtle hatcheries along the coast releasing hatchlings most evenings. Then north to Bandaranaike International, two hours by expressway, with three hours needed at check-in.
