Land at Zurich Airport (ZRH), 10 minutes by train from the city centre — Switzerland's rail network starts inside the terminal. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa: €90 plus VFS charges, 10–15 working days at the consulate but 4–8 weeks door to door once appointment waits are counted, and 30–45 days in the May–August peak. Apply through the Swiss consulate where you can; it clears Indian applications faster than most, often in 8–12 working days.
Under an hour by direct train — Swiss trains run to the printed minute, and a Swiss Travel Pass covers the network plus most lake boats and many mountain railways. Lucerne sits at the head of its lake with the Kapellbrücke, a covered wooden footbridge first built in the 1330s and rebuilt after a 1993 fire, still carrying its painted ceiling panels. The Lion Monument, cut into the rock above the old town, commemorates the Swiss Guards killed in 1792.
Engelberg is 45 minutes from Lucerne by train. From there the Titlis Rotair — the world's first rotating cable car — turns through a full circle as it climbs to 3,020 metres. At the top: a glacier cave cut into the ice, and the Titlis Cliff Walk, Europe's highest suspension bridge at around 3,000 metres. Gloves and sunglasses matter; the snow is there year-round and the glare off it is fierce.
Two hours by train, and one of the prettiest stretches in the country — the Luzern–Interlaken Express runs beside the Sarnersee and the Brienzersee most of the way. Interlaken sits on the flat between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, hemmed in by the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. It is the base town for the Bernese Oberland rather than a destination in its own right.
The highest railway station in Europe at 3,454 metres, reached from Interlaken via Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald in about two and a half hours each way. At the top: the Aletsch Glacier, the longest in the Alps, the Ice Palace carved into it, and the Sphinx observation terrace. Go on a clear morning — in cloud you pay a great deal to stand inside a whiteout — and take the altitude seriously at this height.
A funicular climbs Harder Kulm in ten minutes for the classic view down onto both lakes with the Jungfrau massif behind. Lake steamers cross Thun and Brienz. Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen are each half an hour away — the latter a valley floor with 72 waterfalls dropping off the cliffs, Staubbach the tallest at nearly 300 metres.
Back to Zurich Airport, roughly two hours by direct train from Interlaken Ost. Swiss rail is reliable enough to plan tightly, but still allow three hours at the airport for an international departure. A Swiss Travel Pass covers this final leg as well.
