Land at Noi Bai International (HAN), 30 km and about 45 minutes from the Old Quarter. Indian passport holders need a Vietnam e-visa in advance — USD 25 single-entry, USD 50 multiple-entry, valid for stays up to 90 days. This trip crosses into Cambodia later, so if you plan any re-entry to Vietnam take the multiple-entry option. Settle into the Old Quarter's thirty-six guild streets.
Hoan Kiem Lake sits at the centre, Ngoc Son Temple on its islet reached by a red bridge. The Temple of Literature, founded in 1070 as Vietnam's first university, is a short ride west. Streets in the Old Quarter still cluster by trade — Hang Bac for silver, Hang Gai for silk. Egg coffee, a Hanoi invention using whipped yolk and condensed milk, is worth seeking out.
Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum opens mornings only and closes Mondays and Fridays, plus an annual maintenance period in autumn — verify before you go, and dress modestly. The stilt house and Presidential Palace grounds are behind it. The Museum of Ethnology further out is the best single explanation of Vietnam's 54 recognised ethnic groups, with full-size houses rebuilt in the grounds.
165 km east, two and a half to three hours by expressway. Halong holds roughly 1,600 limestone karst islands across the Gulf of Tonkin and is UNESCO-listed. Overnight junk cruises board early afternoon, with kayaking among the outcrops and usually a cave visit before dinner. October to April is the drier, clearer window; storm cancellations do happen and are not negotiable.
Cruises typically run a dawn tai chi session on deck, then brunch as the boat works back through the karst. Disembark late morning and drive back to Hanoi. The bay is at its best early, before the day boats arrive from the harbour.
Ho Chi Minh City is 1,700 km south — a two-hour flight, and the reason no itinerary drives this leg. Tan Son Nhat (SGN) sits close to the centre. The change in feel is immediate: hotter, louder, and built around motorbikes rather than the colonial grid of Hanoi.
Reunification Palace is preserved as it was on 30 April 1975. The War Remnants Museum nearby is direct and difficult. Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office face each other on the same square, the post office still functioning. Ben Thanh Market in the evening. Cu Chi tunnels, 70 km north-west, are the usual half-day add-on.
Cambodia. The flight from Saigon is about an hour. Indian passport holders need a Cambodian visa — e-visa in advance or visa on arrival, currently USD 30 for a tourist visa, and you will want passport photos with you. Siem Reap is a small, flat town built entirely around the temples; arrive, and get an early night.
Angkor passes are sold as one, three or seven-day tickets and are checked at every temple; buy the day before to make a 05:00 start possible. Sunrise over Angkor Wat's five towers from the reflecting pool is the reason people come. Angkor Thom's Bayon carries over 200 stone faces, and Ta Prohm is the one left in the grip of strangler figs. Shoulders and knees covered — enforced at Angkor Wat's upper level.
Breakfast, then Siem Reap–Angkor International (SAI), the new airport about 50 km east of town — considerably further out than the old one, so allow an hour on the road. Three hours for an international departure.
